Good to see Darius at the top this week! Seven years into his country career and Darius Rucker can boast a perfect record of having chart topping CDs. They are: 1. Learn To Live-2008 2. Charleston, SC 1966-2010 3. True Believers-2013 4. Southern Style-2015

Never realized that, CCN. Good for Darius! Funny, as much as I like most of his songs, I still can't get him out of my head as the front man for Hootie and the Blowfish. I loved their music. I have to say, given your research, he's certainly made country music his "home."

countrychartnut, the label that actually released ZBB's album is Republic Records. Big Machine is only involved in the marketing for ZBB. The album was produced and distributed by Republic.

Zac Brown Band has always had the most interesting label partnerships. First, their Southern Ground label used to be called Home Grown Records, but they had to change it for legal reasons. So, under their own Southern Ground Artists label, they wound up partnering with Bigger Picture Group for radio promotion--this was when "Chicken Fried" was first released. And since Bigger Picture was a small indie label, the albums were distributed by Atlantic Records, which is based out of New York and LA, not Nashville.
The Southern Ground/Bigger Picture/Atlantic relationship was only for ZBB's first 2 albums, The Foundation and You Get What You Give. Beginning with "The Wind", their first single from 3rd album Uncaged, their partnership was changed slightly. Radio promotion was done by RPM Entertainment instead of Bigger Picture. RPM only promoted that one single, though. Beginning with "Goodbye In Her Eyes" (and continuing with "Jump Right In" and "Sweet Annie"), Zac's own label Southern Ground handled radio promotion.
After Uncaged, ZBB's relationship with Atlantic ended. They released the digital EP The Grohl Sessions, Volume I independently through Southern Ground, with Southern Ground also promoting one Grohl Sessions single, "All Alright", to country radio.
Then last year they partnered with John Varvatos Records, Big Machine Label Group, and Republic Records (through their own Southern Ground Artists label). John Varvatos Records isn't a traditional record label--they are mainly involved with the "branding" or how an artist looks (kind of like a sponsorship). Big Machine is involved with marketing, and Republic produces and distributes the album. Zac's own Southern Ground team still promotes their singles to country radio, but any songs they send to rock or pop radio will be promoted by Republic.
In short, a very interesting and dynamic partnership. It's a great one, too, because it benefits all involved.

Not surprised to see Willie and Merle's album hit #1. It's been so long. I especially am a fan of Merle's music-- great songwriter and singer.

Not surprised to see Willie and Merle's album hit #1. It's been so long. I especially am a fan of Merle's music-- great songwriter and singer. I'm glad that it hit #1. And it sold 31,000 copies too, all without a radio hit. Then consider Billy Currington (and I have nothing against Billy, as I do like most of his music)...he released his Summer Forever album the same day that Willie/Merle released their album. And Billy just had a #1 hit -- "Don't It" -- that was heard by millions of radio listeners around the country for weeks on end. And yet...Billy could only sell 20,000 in his first week. Billy = tons of airplay, 20,000 in sales Merle/Willie = no airplay, 31,000 in sales Radio won't play Merle & Willie anymore, but they outsell a lot of the newer artists on the radio these days (and Billy isn't even new, but my point still stands, because most new artists who get a couple of hits are lucky if they can sell 20-30k. Billy has always been a B-list artist at best--he's never had the consistency that someone like Luke Bryan, Keith Urban, Kenny Chesney, Carrie Underwood, etc. has had. Again, I do like Billy and most of his music, but it's pretty sad the way the radio business is done. I mean, Billy can get a #1 hit with ease, so why can't Merle or Willie still get played? It's because country radio is ageist and sexist, in my opinion. They don't play older artists, and they don't play female artists. It's pretty much always been like that -- radio wants to keep the younger listeners on board because they're the future...but it's just all so unfortunate how the system works, imo.

Don't get Isbell vs AJ. No way! There was a lot of confusion about who really had the #1. Apparently. It was very close between these two.

Don't get Isbell vs AJ. No way! There was a lot of confusion about who really had the #1. Apparently. It was very close between these two. Only a few hundred copies separated them. I think Jason Isbell sold about 45,900 (with no airplay -- which is extremely impressive), and Alan sold around 45,500 (with virtually no airplay -- also extremely impressive). It was initially reported that Alan was #1, but SoundScan had to do a recalculation because for some reason they didn't get correct numbers from every retailer...and when the correct numbers came out, Isbell was on top. Both albums are incredible, by the way. I highly recommend them. Jason Isbell has a lot of talent, but unfortunately he doesn't "fit" into the category of what radio likes to play. And Alan is "too old" for radio, even though he still sells way more than most artists that are still popular on the radio. Billy Currington, Canaan Smith, Easton Corbin, Tyler Farr, Kelsea Ballerini, Jerrod Niemann, Frankie Ballard...I could go on and on and on. None of them can sell even close to what Alan did in his 1st week, even though the newer artists have singles that get heard by millions of radio listeners each week, whereas barely a dozen stations are even playing Alan's new single. Radio thinks it's smart to replace all the old artists (Alan, George, Reba) with newbies like Cannan, Frankie, and Tyler, because it's just gonna happen anyway, right? Well, that may be true, but if there's still a demand for Alan, George, and Reba -- and their album sales and concert ticket sales clearly show that there is still a high demand -- then it's really dumb for radio to be in such a rush to replace them with new artists, many of whom will never be able to sustain a long-term career.
