So FGL has 2 in the top 10. Seems as if they can't get any hotter. Don't get them but a lot of other people sure do!

Well, look whose album debuted at #1 from hard copy sales only. Would love to know the number for digital sales that are only sold on his own website. Garth seems to be back in the "game."

Well, look whose album debuted at #1 from hard copy sales only. Would love to know the number for digital sales that are only sold on his own website. Garth seems to be back in the "game." Garth managed 130k for his debut, I believe. That's not too bad of a number--and like you said, I'm sure the digital sales will bring it up higher once those are reported to SoundScan--but it's well below what most people would have expected, myself included. I think the problem here is that the album isn't available on iTunes. Garth did make it digitally available through his own website as well as GhostTunes, but people who use iTunes out of habit (it's called "path dependence") aren't very likely to go buy an album through another online digital store, so I think the album's lack of availability on iTunes really hurt the first-week sales. Another thing--there are a LOT of people who don't realize that Garth has new music out. Most of my Facebook friends have gone to see him on tour in Chicago and Minneapolis but everybody has been incredibly slow to realize that this is an actual new album full of brand new songs. Garth made a really poor choice by releasing "People Loving People" as the first single. It debuted at #19 after its first week at radio, but it only went backward from there and barely spent a month and a half on the charts. The new single "Mom" is at radio now, but all in all the new music so far hasn't made much of a dent. I can guarantee that his opening sales would have been twice as much if he'd had a huge top 5 radio hit out there. His tour is breaking records left and right but that's not a surprise. He hasn't toured in more than a decade, so people are really excited about it. But they go to those shows to hear all of his big 90's hits--they're not buying concert tickets to hear "People Loving People" live. I know that many industry insiders were expecting Garth's album to debut with anywhere from 300k-500k in first-week sales (I was expecting at least that much as well). I am sure that the album will have longevity and sell well through the holidays, but the whole "roll-out" plan has been executed poorly. Not on iTunes, no hit single...awareness was simply much lower than I was expecting, especially given all the fanfare over his tour.

Agree with you that Garth released the wrong song for his lead single--I for one don't like it. But I don't think we can count him out as far as record sales go. He is very good at marketing and capable of changing his game plan when it comes to selling his singles/album. I wouldn't be surprised if he doesn't care as much about album sales as he does selling out on his touring venues. Don't Think he's done trying to set new records in this 3-year tour insofar as concert ticket sales. He loves performing live more than anything, and this tour is more his focus than his album.
Frankly, he's been gone for a long time, and if I'm lucky enough to get a ticket, I still want to hear his big hits more than anything new --they are timeless in several cases and I haven't played them for a long time. As a fan, I have followed and loved him him since 1989 and have noticed what a smart businessman he is. He's acknowledged that he knows it will take some time to compete with the new generation of singers/performers, and he has to work really hard to compete.
That being said, I heard from friends who bought the online album, that he does have some really good songs that are yet to be released. As glad as I am to see him back, Keith will always be my #1, but will always love Garth, (who paved the way for Keith) and whose album did debut as #1 on BB, despite the sales figures. Outside of Jason, that's pretty good-- look how low debuts were in terms of other new albums lately. Most are way below expectations. Just my own observations and thoughts, given the way Radio and the charts work today. Garth learns fast. He also is very protective of songwriters. He's going to do things his way, no matter what. Time will tell how successful he is with both album and tour in terms of a comeback.

Happy to see Garth on top for 2nd week. He's doing better than a lot of others lately except for Jason. Would love to know the extent of digital sales that only his people can turn in but haven't done so far.

Interesting that Garth is on his 3rd week at #1 even though his sales didn't increase much since last week. But then obviously no one else's did either. Holiday season probably the reason. People want to hear Christmas music. Thanks for keeping this updated every week. It is much appreciated.

People want to hear Christmas music. Thanks for keeping this updated every week. It is much appreciated. Well, the older an album is, the less it sells per week. This is actually the week where everybody saw sales jumps because of Black Friday. Garth held steady from the week before but others saw increases. The reason Garth didn't is because his album is the newest and so it would have been tough to post an increase on his last week numbers.
