My favorite LBT album to date. It still has some of the more pop-sounding stuff that has kept me from being an over-the-top fan in the past, but the difference for me on this album is that they do those songs so well. My lone tiny complaint is that the background vocals can sound a bit processed on some of the songs. That's partially due to their amazing natural harmonies to begin with, but I do think some of it has been prettied up when it really didn't need to be.
My favorite song on the album is "Your Side of the Bed". Lyrically, it's just outstanding and starting Karen out on lead vocals just really drew me into it. Love her. The chorus, especially the first time it comes in, is a bit jarring. Wouldn't have minded seeing it softened a bit, but still, just a terrific song. Much like 'Shut Up Train' from the previous CD, I don't expect this one to ever make it to radio. That's OK, though, I stopped listening to country radio years ago.

HITS has increased the projected first week sales of Tornado to the 100-110k range!! That will likely put it at #2 on the Billboard 200, and of course an easy #1 on Top Country Albums. However, it will have some strong competition for #2. Right now, both Bob Dylan and The Avett Brothers are projected in the 95-105k range, just a hair below LBT. The Dave Matthews Band will easily be #1 all-genre with forecasted sales of nearly 275k. I just got the physical copy of the album. I just love to actually have an album in my hands. The lyrics booklet is always a plus and I love all the pictures, especially the one of them in the convertible in the desert. For me, it is a very great album from start to finish. Sure, some of the tracks have interesting sounds/production but I think they and Jay Joyce really make it work. It's got everything I like...powerful ballads like "Your Side Of The Bed" and the superbly produced (and seriously underrated) "Leavin' In Your Eyes", which I think is my favorite. And then there's "Can' Go Back" and "Night Owl", which are almost completely acoustic ballads showcasing absolutely amazing harmonies. "Sober" is another great one, more of a midtempo. And then there's the hard-rocker, "Self Made", which is probably the hardest rocker I think I've ever heard from these guys, but I really like it. "Tornado" is just great--again, I love all the little sounds that Joyce put on this one, plus the little laughing sounds in the background at times. It really is a quirky and sinister song, but different in many ways from Carrie Underwood's similarly-themed "Blown Away". And "Tornado" is a great 2nd single...very unique and LBT-ish, but also radio-friendly. I give the album a solid A and I'm definitely glad I got it!
