This is the same "Friday Night" from Lady Antebellum's Own The Night album. As you can see, Eric is one of the co-writers of the song. Eric has also co-written the smash hits "Barefoot Blue Jean Night" for Jake Owen, "Angel Eyes" for Love & Theft, and "Even If It Breaks Your Heart" for the Eli Young Band.
I never really cared much for Lady A's version of "Friday Night" so I'm glad that Eric's version is FAR superior to theirs. That said, this song doesn't have very original lyrics, and that doesn't change when someone else sings it. I'm still stunned that Eric's last single "If The Fish Don't Bite" wasn't a big hit. If they really wanted to release a song that Eric wrote but someone else cut, they should release "She Rides Away" from David Nail's The Sound Of A Million Dreams album. That song is one of my favorite songs I've heard in the last few years.
"Friday Night" isn't an amazing song but it's really catchy and radio-friendly, and it might be what Eric needs to get a hit. He really needs one after a couple of releases that never caught on, or I worry he won't be with UMG for much longer.

Well it looks like this will be that hit that Eric needed. It's all the way up at #24 after 23 weeks, it's selling pretty well, and ESPN has even been using it as the intro to commercials during their Friday night college football games. Ideally the label would probably like the album to come out before Christmas but I'm guessing it will be a first quarter 2014 release instead. I'm excited to see what else is on the album--Paslay is one of my favorite newcomers.

This definitely isn't my favorite Paslay tune, but I'm really rooting for him. Many of his songwriting cuts have been my favorite songs on others' albums, and some have gone on to become smash singles, including "Barefoot Blue Jean Night", "Even If It Breaks Your Heart", and "Angel Eyes". He also wrote "She Rides Away" on David Nail's last album, plus "It Ain't Pretty" and "Golden" and Lady A's new album. All of these tracks are stellar, at least to my ears.
I liked Eric's first 2 singles (especially "If The Fish Don't Bite") better than "Friday Night", but I can see why this is becoming his break-out hit. I think it's just about timing and EMI was finally able to get radio excited about this guy...plus, FN is really accessible and radio-friendly. His other singles were radio-friendly too but I just don't think it was quite the right "time" to break him on to country radio.
