Although Matt Gary has a mediocre voice, he has a very likeable one too, and I've enjoyed what I've heard form him so far - in particular 'The Days You Live For' and 'Can't Take Her Anywhere'. This new single, I feel, has a rather mundane chorus (basically, just two lines repeated, albeit with a melodic twist). The verses, however, and in particular their opening lines, are stellar: "Left home but home never left me/Got gone but gone could never get me/where I wanted to go". This kind of turn of phrase has been a hallmark of country music forever, and instantly engages the listener. The subject matter is easy to relate to, and celebrates the south without making a big thing of it - like Chris Cagle's new single and many by Jason Aldean. If the chorus didn't let those verses down, this would be a very good song. Ultimately, I think, it's underwhelming.
